The procedure for organizing technical diagnostics of devices is determined by Rostechnadzor order No. 538. This regulatory document establishes that it is necessary to monitor the state of the equipment in the following cases:
- exceeding the number of load cycles defined by the manufacturer as permissible within the GOST standard;
- no information about the permissible number of load cycles for equipment whose service life has exceeded 20 years;
- restoration repair of equipment damaged as a result of an accident;
- detection of hidden defects or inconsistencies with GOST R standards during non-destructive testing;
- other situations provided for by law;

The general list of the main terms and methods used in the technical diagnostics of equipment is fixed in the national standard GOST 20911-89. The procedure for examining equipment varies depending on its type, purpose and scope of application. Therefore, the corresponding GOST is used for a specific type of equipment: for example, for agricultural machines — GOST 24628-81, for locomotives — GOST R 52122-2003.
